The geological history museum of Oiartzun, Luberri, offers a unique opportunity to discover the geological and palaeontological wealth of the Oiartzun Valley, the Oarsoaldea region and the Aiako Harria Natural Park.
It offers a wonderful journey through 1 billion years to understand the intricacies of our geological history.
The centre has several themed rooms and 40 display cases. Throughout the museum, you will encounter a wide variety of rocks, fossils, minerals and geological materials. The murals written in Spanish, Basque and French inform visitors about these materials' characteristics, origin and location.
For example, in the "Rocks, minerals and Fossils" gallery, the basics of geology and the types of fossils, minerals and rocks found in the Basque Country are shown. The "Euskal Herria" gallery will help us understand the rocks' evolution in our mountains over the last 500 million years. On the other hand, the "Oiartzun" gallery deserves a special note: it analyses the first inhabitants of Gipuzkoa, the most significant fossils from various geological periods and the granitic batholith (the only granitic structure that can be found in the Basque Country). Finally, the museum also has a section dedicated to new discoveries.
